Best known for his light-flooded landscapes and flower still lifes, Rohlfs started out as an impressionist painter, turned towards Expressionism in 1910, and found inspiration in the medieval buildings of Soest as well as Andechs monastery and the mountains of Bavaria.

Traces of a postmark; 2 faint creases near upper margin. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
