Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Ärzte und Künstler sollten im Leben noch vielmehr Hand in Hand gehen; ein guter Arzt heilt Seele und Körper, und gute Kunst erfrischt Körper und giebt Hof[f]nung der verlangenden Seele. Doch jeder giebt nur nach seinen Kräften [...]".

After an apprenticeship at the Royal Porcelain Factory in Berlin as well as studies at the Berlin Academy, Paris and Rome, Schauß regularly exhibited at the "Große Berliner Kunstausstellung" from 1893 onwards, his oeuvre including portrait busts, nude sculpture and funerary monuments.

Some ink smudges. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
