Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Ihren schätzenswerthen Wunsch gern erfüllend zeichne hochachtungsvollst [...]".
Studying at the Königsberg Academy from 1849, Scherres mainly applied himself to landscape painting, and was a teacher at the "Verein der Berliner Künstlerinnen" from 1868. Many of his works feature melancholy scenery inspired by study tours along the Rhine and Mark Brandenburg.
Some ink spots; traces of an angular fold near upper left corner. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
