Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Die schönsten Bilder sind die, welche man träumt wenn man im Bett seine Pfeife raucht, die man aber nie malt. van Gogh [...]".

A son of the Austrian artist Matthäus Schiestl the elder, Schiestl started his training in his father's workshop before studying at the Munich Academy from 1894, and made a study visit to Egypt and the Holy Land in 1905.

With his name stamp. Traces of postmarks; some creases. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
