Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Hiermit das gewünschte Autogramm [...]".

Specializing in landscape painting, and a pioneer of photography, Schirm travelled Syria, Palestine and Egypt in 1880 and 1881, a tour that resulted in several popular paintings and etchings of oriental scenery. Schirm operated the landscape studio at the "Schlesische Museum der Bildenden Künste" in Breslau from 1883 to 1889, and opened a luxurious photo studio in Berlin in 1889.

Traces of postmarks. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
