Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Will Eure Zeit mich bestreiten | Ich laß es ruhig geschehen; | Ich komme aus anderen Zeiten | und hoffe in Andre zu gehn. (Grillparzer) [...]".

After studying at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts from 1871 to 1878, Schmid was a professor at the same institution from 1907 and applied himself to historical painting and portraiture, his 1897 painting "Schubertiade" constituting his best-known work.

A few small ink spots and faint creases near left corners. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
