Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.
One of the first illustrators to work for the satirical magazine "Jugend", Schmidhammer soon became a popular illustrator of childrens' books, frequently cooperating with the publishing house Joseph Scholz in Mainz. He created propagandistic picture books during the First World War and co-designed costumes for an 1896 production of "Der Ring des Nibelungen".
Some small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
