A popular marine painter and co-founder of the artists' association "Vereinigung der XI" in 1891, Schnars-Alquist was inspired by his voyages to the Americas, Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand and Ceylon as well as to Northern and Southern Europe, which allowed him to experience and atmospherically depict the sea at any time of the year.

A few small brown stains; postal stamp on verso showing through. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
