Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

A successful artist living in Paris from 1863, where he was fostered by the art patron Duke Charles Tascher de la Pagerie (1811-69), Schrödl moved to Berlin in 1868 and advanced to a popular portraitist before settling in Kronberg in 1887, inspired by the local artists' colony.

Traces of a small fold near lower right corner; a few small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
