Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Dem Herrn Autographensammler auf seinen Wunsch hierdurch meinen Namenszug [...]".

Studying in Dresden and Berlin, Sperling was appointed professor in 1893 and is best known for his popular paintings of dogs (his preferred sitters included dachshunds and pugs).

His name stamp near upper left corner. Traces of postmarks; small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
