Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Eigenhändigen Gruss sendet Ihnen hiemit [...]".

Studying and working in Düsseldorf, Paris, Italy, Munich, Frankfurt, and Karlsruhe, Thoma specialized in landscape painting, many of his works inspired by the Schwarzwald and Taunus regions, portrayed his family and friends, and was appointed director of the Karlsruhe Kunsthalle in 1899, where he designed the Thoma-Kapelle and saw the Thoma-Museum open for his 70th birthday.

Traces of postmarks. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
