Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Col più gran pioneer, e ossequiandolo [...]".

The son of the landscape painter Aurelio Tiratelli (1842-1900), Cesare Tiratelli also specialized in landscape and genre painting and frequently depicted peasant motifs from the Ciociaria region. His painting "Un pellegrinaggio in Ciociaria" earned him an award at the 1893 "Esposizione di Belle Arti" in Rome.

Small tear in upper margin; traces of some angular folds near corners, most prominent near upper left corner; small brown stain near right margin. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
