Struggling to make a living as an engraver in Göttingen and Düsseldorf in the 1860s, Unger went to Leipzig, where he found employment with the publisher E. A. Seemann in 1866, providing illustrations for his "Zeitschrift für bildende Kunst" and reproducing famous paintings. He subsequently settled in Vienna, where he took over the management of the University of Applied Arts in 1881.

Three small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
