Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

Best known as a portraitist, Veth created paintings, drawings and etchings showing contemporary artists and scientists, including Jozef Israëls and Max Liebermann, as well as peasants and family members. His 1891 portrait "Heintje", featuring a young girl from northern Holland, constitutes his most famous work.

Traces of postal stamp; traces of an angular fold near lower left corner. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
