A prominent member of the Düsseldorf School as well as of the "Willingshäuser Malerkolonie", a location he frequented over a period of 25 years, Volkmann specialized in landscape painting, his works sometimes featuring genre motifs with a hint at social romanticism, created illustrations for children's books, and participated in the first exhibition of the "Deutscher Künstlerbund" in 1904.
