First American edition. Presentation copy, signed and inscribed by the author and the actor Raul Julia (one of the leads in the film adaptation) to director and actor Paul Bartel: "I who she spares / you her poison, / Saludos [...]".

Source material for the 1985 film of the same name, directed by Héctor Babenco and starring William Hurt, Raul Julia, and Sônia Braga. The film premiered at the 1985 Cannes Film Festival, where Hurt won Best Actor, and received four Academy Award nominations, where Hurt again won Best Actor.

Minor shelf wear, head and foot of spine just pushed. Small spot of soiling and small pencil notation to the front free endpaper recto. Internally clean and tight, top edge trimmed, other edges untrimmed; minor text block edgewear. Dust jacket unclipped, very minor edgewear. A fine copy.
