To his only female student Éva Gonzalès, informing her that the art dealer Templaër is willing to exhibit a painting of hers, which she should finish "fast and well" and for which she should ask 1500 to 2000 francs: "Mademoiselle, Templaer exposera votre tableau quand vous voudrez. Dépêchez-vous de le terminer vite et bien et joignez-y une petite notice et le prix - demandez 2000 frs, laissé à 1500".

Éva Gonzalès (1847-83), the daughter of the novelist Emmanuel Gonzalès, was a student of Charles Chaplin and Gustave Brion before being introduced to Édouard Manet, who accepted her as his student and supported her career. In the salon of 1870, Gonzalès first presented her work alongside Manet's famous portrait of her working at an easel. In 1879, Gonzalès married the graphic artist Henri Guérard, a close friend and collaborator of Manet.

On stationery with printed address "4 Rue Saint Petersbourg", Manet's residence from 1872 to 1878.

Traces of folds and minimally stained. With a collector's note in pencil. The envelope with printed monogram "M" and somewhat dust-soiled.
