To the British writer and socialite Mary Barnes Hutchinson, thanking her for showing him a collection of Matisse lithographs: "Just a line to thank you for letting me come and look at the Matisse lithographs. I find that we have actually four of his lithographs ourselves already, not one as I think I told Madame Duthuit".

The Madame Duthuit mentioned in the letter was Matisse's daughter Marguerite who had married the important art critic Georges Duthuit. Mary Barnes Hutchinson knew Henri Matisse personally, having been introduced to him by the critic Clive Bell. Matisse drew two charcoal portraits of Hutchinson in 1936. Georges Duthuit was also among the many affairs of Mary Barnes Hutchinson.

The invitation to the opening of the Matisse retrospective on 16 June 1931 was equally addressed to Mary Barnes Hutchinson.

On stationery of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Minimal browning and tears.
