To the fellow novelist Jean Middlemass (1833-1919) about publishing matters: "Kindly do not forget the few 'serious remarks' promised for 'Barbe's Secret'. The proofs I believe were despatched to you yesterday, with an intimation that we were 80 lines or so short of copy. I heard 'Sackloth and Broadcloth' and 'Dandy' have both been successful literary ventures with you. I envy you your powers of application [...]".
"Sackcloth and Broadcloth: A Novel" (3 vols.) and "Dandy" had both been published in London by Tinsley Brothers, 1881.
Traces of old mounting on the verso and ink offsetting to the first page. Includes a small collector's note.
