George II was well-known for his efforts in building the so-called Meiningen Court Theater and the Meiningen acting group. Together with his third wife, the actress and later Baroness of Heldburg, Ellen Franz (1839-1923), he laid the foundations for the early splendor of this renowned acting troupe. He was also close to musicians and painters such as Wilhelm von Kaulbach and Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld.
