An annunciation of the birth of Prince Leopold Johann, the last-born male Habsburg. The much-awaited crown prince, "auspicissime nato" on 13 April 1716, died an infant on 4 November at the age of not even seven months. Ultimately, succession passed to his sister Maria Theresia, born in 1717, in accordance with the provisions of the Pragmatic Sanction. With Leopold Johann ended the male Habsburg lineage.
The present Altdorf celebratory publication contains the official annunciation by the parents, Emperor Charles VI and his wife Elisabeth Christina of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, then the oration delivered by the Altdorf rector Johann Heinrich Müller, and finally the Latin and German poems of homage by the editor, the classicist C. G. Schwarz (1675-1751; cf. ADB XXXIII, 227) who held the chair of oration and poesy.
