To a friend, announcing that he has arranged to send a desired cast together with a wax mold in order to carve others: "Le accludo il calco da Lei desiderato, con una forma in cera, per poterne cavare degli altri [...]".

Fiorelli was among the most important Italian archaeologists of the 19th century. As director of the excavations at Pompeii, he professionalized the archaelogical works, focusing on preservation and documentation. He also invented a method to make plaster casts of the victims of the volcanic eruption.
