Papistische Inquisition und gulde[n] Flüs der Römischen Kirchen.
Folio (225 x 320 mm). (40), 740, (18) pp. T. p. printed in red and black. With 30 large portrait woodcuts by Tobias Stimmer within the text. Contemp. blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards on 5 raised double bands (restored).
Second edition of this caustic Papal history (first published in 1582), written by "one of the vilest polemicists of his century" (cf. Goedeke). Stimmer's fine portraits of apostles and popes (after Onuphrius Panvinius and others) are surrounded by allegorical and ornamental borders and were first used (also by Jobin) in 1573.
Rather browned and occasionally slightly waterstained; early and final pages show more significant staining and remargining. Some edge demage to t. p. Blindstamped binding (rollstamped with allegories of the Virtues) rubbed and stained, rebound using original material (new endpapers).
