First edition, dedicated to the travel writer Elizabeth Craven (Margravine of Brandenburg-Ansbach, formerly wife of the Earl of Berkeley, and friend of Horace Walpole). Griffiths travelled the Orient in 1785 in Greek disguise. His journey took him via Constantinople and Chios, Smyrna, Sardis, Konia, and Taurus to Syria, Antioch, and Aleppo. In Mascat, Oman, he gives a rather baffled account of an oriental dance ("nautch").
