Topographia Archiducatus Austriae Inf[erioris] Modernae, seu Controfee und Beschreibung, aller Stätt Clöster und Schlösser wie sie anjetzo stehen in dem Ertzherzogtumb unter Österreich.
Folio. 4 parts in 1 vol. 8 unnumbered ff. With 4 engr., illustrated title pages, 4 double-page-sized engr. maps, and 510 engr. views on 259 engr. plates (7 of which in double-page size). Contemp. vellum with ms. title to spine.
The most extensive and desirable, also the rarest edition of Vischer's great topography of Lower Austria. Compared to the 1672 first edition, this one features a place index, four engraved maps, and several new views. The splendid double-page-sized views of Vienna are here printed individually on seven plates, the other vedutas are arranged two on a single leaf. Tobias Sadeler's beautiful engraved title pages were re-used unchanged for this second edition and thus bear the year of the first edition.
Almost never encountered complete: German auction records of the last 20 years list no more than three copies of the second edition, two of which are incomplete (as was the last copy sold: Dorotheum 71 , no. 690 [ATS 180,000 before premium and VAT]).
Autograph ownership of Johann Gottfried Lechner, dated 1723, to title page (probably the like-named purser listed in the Lower Austrian Roll of Nobles in 1700). Two later, different, monogram stamps ("HK") on flyleaf and in the blank margin of the engraved title. Covers very slightly warped, otherwise a flawless, virtually spotless and unbrowned copy with all engravings in crisp contrast on superior paper.
Nebehay/W. III, 783. Cf. VD 17, 12:196603V (two copies of the 1672 edition, one of which is incomplete).
