The Austrian Army, illustrated

[Hauslab, Franz von]. Darstellung der K. K. Oesterreichischen Armee mit allen Chargen [...].

Vienna, Joseph Trentsensky, (1823).

Small 4to. Lithogr. t. p., 2 lithogr. ff. (table of contents), 202 lithographs in original colour, numbered 3-205 (nos. 15, 44, 64-69, 96-106, 161, 184-186 not numbered; no. 43 counted as 44 in error). Elaborate contemp. calf; original lithogr. wrapper covers mounted within decorative giltstamped cover borders. Giltstamped neo-gothic spine decoration. All edges gilt. White moirée silk endpapers. In contemp. slipcase.

First edition; assembled by Franz von Hauslab and lithographed by Joseph Trentsensky. Extremely rare. Contains an introduction on the various regiments, followed by 36 chapters, each of which concerns a single army unit, with all the ranks discusses separately. The numerous illustrations of the soldiers are coloured in full detail, allowing for an exact reconstruction of the historical uniforms. The binding design is a splendid example of the neo-gothic style of Romanticism.

Lithogr. bookplate "A. Balsan" on front pastedown, probably the library of the industrialist and politician Auguste-Jean-Jacques-Martin Balsan (1836-96); ms. ownership "Bauer Lieutnant" on flyleaf.

Lacking the separately issued folio appendix (20 ff. of artillery and wagons). Hinges beginning to spilt; binding rubbed, otherwise very well preserved. The Austrian National Library holds only the 1975 facsimile.
