To the academic painter and art critic Charles-Olivier Merson, concerning the Exposition de Toulouse. Iwill thanks Merson for his "thought" but has to decline to send another painting as the works "on Volney", presumably works inspired by the Orientalist writings of the comte Volney, "are promised for Lille". He expresses his hope that his "simple visiting card" in Toulouse will stay there, alluding to a potential official purchase and laments that the "times are so tough".

Somewhat duststained.
