To John Henderson (1862-1938), Secretary of the National Liberal Club: "Your letter has just reached me forwarded on here - & I write to say how deeply grateful I feel for the honour your Committee have done me by their invitation - but I don't think I should have the courage to accept it! I have never made an 'after meal' speech in my life - & I believe it is the most difficult & delicate of all such performances & demands ease - grace - fluency - sparkling wit! - all qualities of which I am painfully devoid [...]".

Violet Bonham Carter was the daughter of Prime Minister H. H. Asquith; she later became active in Liberal politics herself. A leading opponent of appeasement, she was Sir Winston Churchill's closest female friend, apart from his wife. Her grandchildren include the actress Helena Bonham Carter.
