Mann, Thomas, German writer and Nobel laureate (1875-1955). Typed letter signed.

Zürich, 16 June 1949.

4to. 1 p.

To Mr. Fortin, in German, expressing his gratitude for his "affectionate and friendly letter": "[...] It made me happy that you mention 'Doctor Faustus' in the same breath with 'The Glass Bead Game'. These books are actually brothers. Of course, brothers can look very different and still be of the same blood.

It seems that nowadays all European books worth reading are written by elderly gentlemen. There is not much to say for today's youth at present, but let us hold on to the phrase 'at present' [...]" (transl.).

From the collection of the German theologian Hermann Dembowski (1928-2012).
