Early printing in Croatian

[Polanco, Juan Alfonso, SJ]. Izpravnik za erei ispovidnici, i za pokornik.

Rome, Sac. Congreg. de Propaganda Fide, 1635.

8vo. 298, (2) pp. With 2 woodcut vignettes on both sides of the title page. 19th-century boards.

First Croatian edition of the Spanish Jesuit Juan Alfonso Polanco's (1516-77) "Breve directorium ad confessarii ac confitentis munus rite obeundum" (1582), translated by the Jesuit Simon Budina from Zadar. Printed in the Illyrian Glagolitic type, which had remained in use in the croatophone areas. The Vatican Congregation press had taken over the types from the Protestant printing shop in Urach (cf. M. Murko, Die Bedeutung der Reformation und Gegenreformation für das geistige Leben der Südslaven [Prague/Heidelberg 1927], p. 60).

Occasional browning and waterstaining. Uncut, untrimmed copy of this very rare work, complete with both final blanks.
