"First edition in German" (Atabey), translated by J. L. Schmidt. The principal work of Dimitrie Cantemir, Prince of Moldavia (1673-1723), author of numerous learned historical works. With the author's portrait, portraits of the Turkish rulers, and a layout plan of the city of Constantinople.

Endpapers stamped "Andre S." and with ms. ownership "H. W. Lado" (both 18th-century ownerships); deleted stamp to title page; occasional edge repairs. Formerly in the Ottoman collection of the Swiss industrialist Herry W. Schaefer.
