To his editor Peter Joseph Simrock regarding his 4 songs, op. 17 which he had recently sent him for publication. Brahms informs him that Clara Schumann asks to send the full score as well as the voices to Dr. Hübner.

Brahms's "Gesänge für Frauenchor" (as his 4 songs are called in German) were given for the first time as part of Clara Schumann's concerts in Hamburg and Altona on January 15 and 16, 1861.

Julius Hübner was a German historical painter of the Düsseldorf school of painting and the brother-in-law of Brahms's friend, the painter Eduard Bendemann.
