Richthofen is noted for coining the terms "Seidenstraße" and "Seidenstraßen" = "Silk Road(s)" or "Silk Route(s)" in 1877. The Richthofen Range (aka the Qilian Mountains), a northern outlier of the Kunlun Mountains, forming the border between Qinghai and the Gansu provinces of northern China, were named after him.
