First edition of this early work. It is generally agreed that Quesnay's physiological studies formed the basis for his later economic studies, hinting at the later development of his practical philosophy or, which is much the same for Quesnay, of his economic philosophy. The present work has a much broader view than Quesnay's other medical works which merely dealt with problems of medical practice. "The Essai physique is [...] an examination of the necessary scientific basis. With great honesty he exerts himself to assess the results of contemporary knowledge in the field of chemistry, physiology and the mental sciences".

Contemporary bookplate to pastedown; handwritten and stamped ownerships to title-page.
