First edition of this account of Napoleon's disastrous Russian campaign of 1812, which saw the Grande Armée, the largest army ever assembled in the history of warfare up to that point, starving in the Russian Winter on its retreat - the greatest and bloodiest of the Napoleonic campaigns and a turning point in the Napoleonic Wars.

Binding rubbed. Quite unevenly browned; slightly waterstained; several near-contemporary stamps of Austrian military libraries (cancelled). Latterly in the library of the Viennese collector Werner Habel (1939-2015) with his handwritten and stamped ownership, dated 1976, to the pastedown.
