First edition.

A study of Roman history, "examining the most important actions [of Roman rulers] as well as the underlying intentions and political maxims. Based on a study of sources, this book had an inspiring effect" (cf. Wurzbach). The account begins with the history of Julius Caesar, treats well-known figures such as Nero, Trajan, Augustus, Marcus Aurelius and Diocletian, and ends with a short description of the politics of Constantius Chlorus, the father of Constantine the Great. Each historical episode is followed by a short critical analysis of the politics and actions taken by the protagonist.

Spine a little rubbed, lower spine-end scuffed. Paper very slightly browned. From the library of the Viennese collector Werner Habel, with his ownership stamp to flyleaf.
