To Dr. E. M. Kafka, Vienna, in the year between his two great late successes, "Hedda Gabler" (1890) and "The Master Builder" (1892). "Lieber Freund, empfangen Sie hierdurch [...] meinen herzlichsten Dank für die mir zu Theil gewordene große Ehre und Auszeichnung seitens des Vereines 'Freie Bühne' in Wien [...]".

From 1890 onwards, Eduard Michael Kafka (1869-93) produced a monthly journal for literature and criticism under the title "Moderne Dichtung" in Brno. From its second year on, it was published in Vienna as the "Moderne Rundschau" (until December 1891); its contributors included Anzengruber, Richard Dehmel, Gerhart Hauptmann, Ferdinand von Saar, Felix Salten, and Arthur Schnitzler. In April 1891 Kafka was one of the hosts at a banquet given in honour of Henrik Ibsen on the occasion of the Viennese performance of "The Pretenders" (cf. ÖBL III, 170).
