A Commercial Guide. Sailing Directions for the Coast of China.
4to. 84, (4) pp. With two folding manuscript tables (in Danish) bound in at the end. Later half cloth with marbled sides and gold-tooled title on front cover.
Excerpt from the second edition of "A Chinese Commercial Guide" published in Canton 1844, of which this is chapter 1. It includes sailing directions that were noted during a survey of the Chinese outer islands between Xiamen and Xiangshan in January-April 1843, by captains Kellet and Coolinson of the H.M.S. Starling and Plover. As this area is notorious for its many dangerous small islands and rocks, a pilot guide was essential for British sailors to navigate these waters. The topographic names are given in English and Chinese characters.
With library mark on the front pastedown and three stamps of the Marinens Bibliotek on the title-page. Several pencil annotations. The last printed page is damaged by the additional folding manuscript page that is bound in at the end, otherwise in good condition.
