To the writer and translator Alice Bellony-Rewald in connection with his autobiography: "Received your note and the Korectype. Many thanks. What a break to have your flat here. I go to my studio every two days or so for my mail and an appointment, but the street is full of concrete mixers and steam drills. [...] There is no hurry in translating my chapter; I think I told you I'm rewriting it, reducing it to two thirds. [...] a couple of pages will do - to give me an idea, or at least a French publisher, of what my book sounds like. Your evening with Seitz [William C. Seitz] and the Duchamps makes things seem very close, as if we were in on it [...]".

Alice Bellony-Rewald, wife of the famous art historian John Rewald, had lent her apartement in Paris to Man Ray and his wife Juliet Browner, who was recovering from an operation. His own studio in rue Férou was unsuitable for working and living because of the roadworks mentioned in the letter. At the time, Ray was writing his autobiography "Self Portrait", which would be published in 1963. The apparent collaboration with Alice Bellony-Rewald did not last, and the first French edition of the book was published in the translation of Anne Guérin in 1964.
