(4), 171 pp. Original printed wrappers (repaired). Small 4to (144 x 182 mm).

Upper wrapper cover signed and inscribed by Ibsen to Friedrich Karl Schubert: "Herrn Hauptmann F. H. (?) Schubert freundlichst zugeeignet". The army captain, writer and critic Schubert (1832-92) is mentioned by Ibsen in a letter to G. v. d. Groeben (21 March 1880) as a "good and dear acquaintaince". First published in 1857, Ibsen's third play "Fru Inger til Østråt" (Lady Inger of Osteraat) reflects the birth of Romantic Nationalism in mid-19th century Norway.

Wrappers a little stained; binding and spine reinforced with cloth and old paper; stiff modern endpapers pasted down. Interior a little browned throughout and occasionally slightly foxed; an old library shelfmark in red ink to title-page. Some 10 pages pasted together in the gutter; a slight paper flaw to pp. 64/65 (insignificant loss to a few letters); pp. 151-154 a little soiled in the upper margin with a small paper flaw. Title-page pasted to a wide paper tab on verso; a paper tear in the gutter of the final leaf, completely reinforced on verso. Untrimmed copy.
