To Mr. Kanes about the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and 1871, Britain's position therein, and the Siege of Paris: "Thank you for your note received this morning. The weather was quite sufficient ground for every one to absent himself yesterday. It was a most disagreeable day [...] For France I have I confess good hopes eventually, but the process is difficult & painful. There is a clear increase of anxiety on our part to do something but our government has no lead in it. The consolation in the rain yesterday was the hope that it was raining well down on the German besiegers [...]".

With additional date in Auguste Comte's positivist calendar. Slightly brownstained, with 2 small strips of old mounting tape on verso.
