[Probably Italy, mid-17th century].

4to (ca. 205 x 277 mm). Italian (7 pp., 31 lines) and Latin (2½ pp., 56 lines) manuscript on paper. Loose bifolia, stored together in a late 19th century cover wrapper, inscribed "Relazione originale Latina, ed Italiana, del martitio del P. Edmondo Arosmitei Gesuita".

A rare near-contemporary account, in Italian and Latin, of the trial and execution of the Jesuit priest Edmund Arrowsmith from Haydock in Lancashire. One of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales, he was hanged, drawn and quartered for high treason at Lancaster on 28 August 1628; he was beatified in 1929 and canonized in 1970. The present manuscript reports appear to have been prepared by Italian Jesuits soon after the event.

Closely written in two different hands. Some dampstaining; occasional ink corrosion and light paper flaws in the folds, but altogether well-preserved and easily legible throughout.
