To one of his students, mentioning the funeral ceremony of Giacomo Rossini. Thomas had passed several days at the Château de Compiègne before returning to Paris to attend Rossini's funeral. Because of his duties and the conference for the burial ceremony he could not see the addressee, who, having passed the final exams and taken his degree, is leaving the Paris Conservatory. Thomas, then a professor there, sincerely regrets this and admits to not knowing the results of a certain nomination: "J'étais départi huit jours au Palais de Compiègne.
