One of the most prominent representatives of the Hague School, Apol specialized in winter landscapes, his impressions of an 1880 journey to Spitsbergen on the "SS Willem Barents" serving him as a rich source of inspiration.

Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
