Living in Spain and Morocco between 1888 and 1890 before returning to Germany, Auberlen is best known for his portraits of literararies, but applied himself to landscape and genre painting as well.

Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
