One of the most popular illustrators of the late 19th century, Claudius lived in Dresden from 1879, joined the Goppeln artists' colony, and was a short-term member of the Willingshäuser artists' colony, inspired by an 1885 study visit to the Schwalm region.

Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
