Influenced by Impressionism, Clausen was one of the foremost modern painters of landscapes and of peasant life, excelling in rendering his motifs under outdoor sunlight, was a founding member of the New English Art Club in 1886, and an official war painter during the First World War.
Self-addressed by the collector. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
