Starting out as a lithographer, Ehrentraut soon founded his own studio in Berlin and began painting French soldiers of the 17th century. Continuously studying Dutch masters and developing his own style, he advanced to become one of the most important miniature painters of the Berlin school.
Some small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
