Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "'Form und Inhalt!' Streit für Müssige. Dem Schöpferischen ist es dasselbe, wenn er oft auch glaubt, das eine oder andere bevorrechtet zu haben. Das Werk selbst widerspricht seiner Theorie [...]".

Starting out with funerary monuments in his native Dortmund, Elkan went on to design the Knesset Menorah in Jerusalem, his best-known work, as well as various monuments, busts, and medals, before emigrating to London in 1935. In 1895 he was a founder member of the football club that later became Eintracht Dortmund.

Traces of a postmark. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
