Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

Specializing in animal sculpture, Gaul reached wide recognition with his work "Römische Ziegen" at the 1900 Paris World Fair and was appointed professor at the Berlin Academy of Arts in 1908. The majority of his works depict wild animals, including lions, bears, monkeys, wisents, penguins and otters.

Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
